Rachel Van Dyken is a new author for me. I read The Bet this summer – and was NOT blown away.  So, I was going to bypass this one, but decided instead to read though a few reviews. AND I’M SO GLAD I DID. This is simply a beautiful engaging story that once I started reading – I couldn’t put it down. This is Wes and Kiersten’s story. Kiersten has finally left home and is a freshman in college. The past two years have been more than difficult, as she begins to process through a very tragic event that has left her numb. At orientation, she literally “runs into” Wes Michaels. Wes is still reeling from his own heartache and tragedy, but is drawn to Kiersten like a magnet. The first half of the book is funny and entertaining. The chemistry between Kiersten and Wes practically leaps off the page. The second half of the book explores a different side of love, as the two fight through yet another tragedy. Here’s what was great about this coming of age story. First, it is a dialogue driven story which I absolutely have to have for a love story. Romance cannot be conveyed if they don’t talk to one another!! Wes and Kiersten’s witty banter carries this story through to the end. Second, the development of such superb secondary characters blew me away. Lisa and Gabe are not only funny and entertaining, but tender and real when they need to be. Third, these are characters with believable backgrounds which helps drive the storyline. Finally, their love story is sweet and romantic – readers will root for them to make it. The ending is implausible, but I really didn’t care, I was just satisfied with my HEA.  I do not typically read the author’s acknowledgements, but for some reason lately I’ve been curious if there’s a back-story to the actual story. And sure enough there is here. THIS IS A MUST – READ THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS!!
