MY HEART TYPICALLY LOVES A HAPPY ENDING BUT…
Honestly – I’m giving 2 hearts (but cracking one) because I liked the way the story ended. I’m more than a little annoyed by the whole story. I felt like the author threw everything PLUS the kitchen sink at me. Alcoholism, lying, abuse, blackmail, drugs, embezzlement, two unplanned pregnancies, and oh, I almost forgot – a fire. The heroine was difficult to like – in fact all most all of the characters were difficult to like except for Luke. I wouldn’t even classify her as a heroine – just one very messed up chick! This is a book with a love triangle: Emmy, Kyle and Luke. Emmy is obsessed with Kyle. Kyle is obsessed with Emmy. Luke loves Emmy. Emmy wants to love Luke – and eventually does. The story is way too long, and there is way too much angst. There weren’t “enough normal” secondary characters to balance out all the craziness. Dialogue is so important to the development of a good romance – and once again there just is not enough. The plot was just too heavy for me – even though I do like redemption stories. Conflict is important in romance – but sometimes too much – is just too much for any heart to handle.
